If you are a visitor to the Destin, FL area, you have probably heard how the weather consists of warmth and sunshine. During the summer months, it is very common to have an afternoon rain shower which consists of a terrential downpour for about 20 minutes followed by sunshine. The rain is quickly dried up and you would barely be able to tell that it did rain unless you witnessed it for yourself. However, a couple of times per year, a storm will come through the area and it may rain the entire weekend. While this rain will keep you away from the beautiful beaches along the Emerald Coast of Florida, and keep you from swimming at the pool at your condo or hotel, your visit doesn’t have to be a complete loss. At this park, you can see shows with dolphins and sea lions and have encounters with many different species of marine animals.. Take the kids to the Emerald Coast Science Center. Plan Ahead for Hurricane Season
Hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30, and it’s best to be prepared when it comes to these intense storms. To Have on Hand If a hurricane is coming towards your area, you have two options. You can either stay in your house if it is safe to do so, or you can evacuate the area and wait out the storm somewhere else. If you decide to stay, then there are some basic items that you will need. Have three days worth of food and water for each person in your household, along with extra clothes. If you can, get a radio that is either battery-powered or charged using a hand crank in order to stay updated on the situation. In case of the loss of electricity, make sure you have a flashlight with extra batteries. It’s smart to have some sleeping bags on hand so that you can sleep somewhere without windows. It’s not necessary to have, but you can also have things like books or puzzles in order to pass the time. Make sure you’re prepared for any hurricanes that might make their way to your area. Weather Conditions to Watch For Hurricanes are bad themselves, but […]

Helpful Tips for Beach Safety
Going to the beach is fun for everyone, but it’s important to know how to stay safe. To prevent sunburn, make sure you wear sunscreen. Even if it’s a cloudy day, the sun here in Florida can sneak through and you’ll get sunburned without even noticing. Inexperienced swimmers should wear life jackets if they go into the water, and children and the elderly should have someone watching over them due to currents in the area. Rip Current Safety The most dangerous thing about the beach is not the sun, the rough water, or even the wildlife. Rip currents were responsible for 80% of lifeguard rescues at beaches. Rip currents are currents of water that flow away from shore and can extend past breaking waves. Because rip currents pull anything caught in them away from shore, it’s not effective to swim against the current. If you are an experienced swimmer, try swimming parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. If you don’t think you are able to do that, try to float or tread water until you are free from the current. If you don’t think either of these are possible for you, then draw attention to yourself […]

Sweet Season Farms Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch
Friday, October 2, the fam went to Sweet Season Corn Maze in Milton to do their 8 acre corn maze in the dark. We have gone every year for 4 years and always have an amazing time. The maze itself is full of twists and turns and guarantees hours of fun. You can choose to take a passport (available at the information tent) with you in to the maze so you can answer the trivia questions at each of the 10 markers to help you find your way out. You can also choose to use your phone to scan the QR Codes at each of the 10 stations and answer trivia questions to find your way. We like the mystery of finding our way in the dark, but for those with younger children the daytime maze might be a better option. This year’s design is in honor of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos baseball team and offers plenty of chances to lose yourself in the fun of navigating the maze. Pretty sure we were stuck for about 30 minutes in the letters by “Sweet Season Farms” but managed to make it out and had so much fun doing it! In addition to the […]

Mi Gente Authentic Mexican Food
My family and I discovered Mi Gente’s Supermarket a couple of years ago and from the first taste we were hooked. I was born and raised in El Paso, TX where great Mexican food can be found within a block or two anywhere in the city. I left there some 20+ years ago and with the exception of traveling to Mexico haven’t had really great, authentic Mexican food since. Then we went to Mi Gente. These are the best tacos anywhere in the county. Now, if you’re looking for ambiance or specialized service this is not the place for you. It is a grocery store with many great items to buy including fantastic baked goods and fresh corn tortillas, but this is not a sit down restaurant. The menu for the food that is available can be viewed over the register in the market. They have burritos, quesadillas, tortas, and tacos, but my all time favorite are the tacos. You can either get regular tacos (meat only) or super tacos with avocado and melted cheese. My family goes for the super tacos every time. You have your choice of 6 different types of meat as well. You can choose from […]

Rock on Over to Rockin Tacos
On Wednesday my husband I decided to go try out Rockin Tacos on the Boardwalk in Ft. Walton Beach. It was about 5:30 when we got there and the place was hopping. Even with all the people in the restaurants we were seated very quickly. We opted to eat outside even though it had just rained because the view is phenomenal. A gentleman was wiping down all the tables and chairs due to the rain and stopped and spoke to people as he went. The staff all seemed very helpful and friendly. One of the first things I noticed was the bar. Rockin Tacos has an extensive supply of liquors to choose from to please any connoisseur. You can walk right up from the beach and sit and sip your drink while looking at the beautiful Gulf waters. We were served salsa and chips right away and those were quickly eaten. The chips were crispy and considering that we were both quite hungry were a welcomed starter. My husband ordered the Tacos de Pescado which featured fresh Gulf Mahi over a cabbage slaw. It was served with a bit of Spanish rice and 2 tacos for $13.99. My husband has […]

Halloween Trick or Treating Safety
Halloween is only a few months away and it is a great time to promote your business by having Halloween sales and promotions. This is a favorite time of year and is proven by the fact that about $7 billion dollars is spent on halloween by consumers. This amount that Americans are spending on halloween has doubled over the last 7 years. That figure includes about $2.5 billion on halloween costumes, $300 million on pet costumes, $2 billion on candy, and about another $2 billion on Halloween decorations. Halloween offers many fun events such as Fall festivals. Don’t forget that these “Fall Festivals” from churches used to be called Halloween festivals. Also, there are many Halloween haunted houses. There are Halloween costume contests and pumpkin carving contests. And, of course, the all-time favorite for the kids, trick or treating. Trick or Treat safety has become a growing concern because of the amount of vehicles on the road. Part of this concern is the the large amount of lazy parents who drive their car from house to house while their kids knock on the doors of neighborhoods and say, “trick or treat.” It’s dark outside and it can be dangerous for […]

Paddle Boarding in Paradise
Paddle Boarding on the Emerald Coast Whether you are a tourist or a local, it’s always great to find a new adventure or hobby that is both fun and relatively safe. Also, some of us need to find adventures that are budget-friendly. This past weekend, I found a great new pastime that is easy on my wallet, fun, peaceful, and great exercise. That new pastime is paddle boarding. A few months back, I attended the multi-chamber Business After Hours, which consisted of Crestview Area Chamber, Destin Area Chamber of Commerce, Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, and the Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce. The event was held at Northlight Marina in Niceville, and it was a great event! At that event, I won a door prize which was 1 free hour of paddle boarding with Paradise Paddle Boards. I finally had some free time and I decided to try out this new adventure with my son, who is 11 going on 30. We arrived at Bluewater Marina at Lj Schooner’s Restaurant, where Paradise Paddle Boards sets up shop right next door at Schooner’s Beach. We met Jimmie there, who is one of the owners of this business. She went […]
Shalimar Cheers Pub
OK, so you’ve tried all the ways to make new friends as an adult without resorting to hanging out at the local bar, and you are still coming up short. Much has been written recently about how hard it is to get to know new people once you are out of school, toiling in the workaday world, or raising kids, or whatever. Where are the places you can relax and be yourself, and as a bonus, meet people of like persuasion, or even radically different from yourself, but on neutral turf? Those of us over a certain age will remember a very popular sitcom of the 1980s called Cheers, about a corner pub in Boston where assorted characters bared their souls for a half hour, and all problems were neatly wrapped up by the time the last ad had to run. Underlying this were the constants of inter-character friction and quirks, and some of the characters were so successful they managed to spin off shows of their own (i.e., Frasier, with Kelsey Grammer). The Cheers bar was a place where everybody knows your name, as the title song reminded us every time we tuned in for eleven seasons. Few remember […]
What to pack for your visit to Crab Island
It’s no doubt that Crab Island is one of the hot spots in the Destin, FL area. Crab Island is an underwater island at the entrance of Choctawhatchee Bay near the East Pass in Destin. Crab Island is typically only 2-3 feet deep which allows children and adults a huge swimming pool-like area to play and keep cool from the hot summer sun. The water is usually crystal clear. Crab Island is an extremely popular hangout place for families and partying people. There are plenty of activities going on at Crab Island, such as live music, dancing, water sports such as volleyball, chicken fighting, free giveaways, food and beverage vendors, and even merchandise vendors. If you have never been to Crab Island Destin, FL, you may be wondering, “How you I get to Crab Island?” Well, you must have a boat, jet ski, or paddle board to get to Crab Island. You should never try to swim from the shore to get to Crab Island, because the current from the tide flow can be very strong. On the Emerald Coast, Boat rentals in Destin and Fort Walton Beach are very easy to find and usually reasonably priced for a rental […]
Cheap Gas in Okaloosa County
Are you looking for lowest gas prices in Okaloosa County? Well, there is no gas that I would call cheap in price; however, there are some gas stations with lower pricing than others. Whether you are in Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Crestview, Niceville, Valparaiso, Shalimar, or Mary Esther, there are quite a few fluctuations in gas prices. Even a few pennies saved over an entire year can save you a lot of money in the long run. But make sure you are doing your part to reduce your gas consumption, such as slowing your speed, car pooling when possible, combining trips across town, changing your air filter regularly, and keeping your tires properly inflated. All of these can save your money and in combination with buying the lowest priced gas, it can add up to an entire car payment over the course of a year! Below are the 10 lowest priced gas stations in Okaloosa County. The list changes daily, so check back often to get the best deal. Lowest Gas Prices in Crestview, Destin, Eglin AFB, Fort Walton Beach, Mary Esther, Miramar Beach, Niceville, Shalimar, Valparaiso Florida Gas Prices provided by GasBuddy.com

Crab Island Destin
We had yet another beautiful weekend on the Emerald Coast and Crab Island was at the center of all of the fun. It was sunny, warm, and the water was crystal clear without any pesky jellyfish. Crab Island was packed with boats, wave runners, paddle boarders, kayaks, and, of course, lots of people. As always during the Summer, there were plenty of activities going on this past weekend at Crab Island. Among the crowd of people at Crab Island, many were tourists, as evident by the quantity of rental pontoon boats from Destin. Crab Island has become one of those “must visit” attractions in the Destin – Fort Walton Beach area and for good reason. The water is as clear as any swimming pool and just the right temperature to cool you off from the hot Florida sun. There is plenty of music, often live bands playing. There are food and beverage vendors. There is water volleyball and even chicken fighting contests. For the kids, you’ll find plenty of inflatables. Of course, Helen Back was there shooting out t-shirts from their air cannon and giving out their delicious pizza. Paddle Boarding has become very popular along the Emerald Coast and […]
Gulf Coast Immediate Care
What do you do when you are vacationing and a sudden medical emergency arises? For that matter, even if you are at home and someone becomes violently ill or is injured, your first thought may be to call 911 or go immediately to the closes hospital emergency room. If the illness or injury is truly life-threatening, you are on the right track. But what if the minor emergency involves chills and fever, or a child falling off the backyard jungle gym appears to have a sprain, and you just want to make sure there are no broken bones involved? Try calling your local personal physician (if its during office hours), and you will likely be told that the earliest appointment available is next week, or even later. If you insist on being seen immediately, the receptionist will likely refer to you to option A above the hospital emergency room. So you go to the emergency room, and submit to the system that is really equipped for full blow, ambulance-arriving emergencies, like youve seen on TV. You feel out of place, and a little embarrassed about tying up resources really designed for much more serious situations than yours. Have no […]
American Mobile Marine – Boat Repair
When Scott Tucker decided to go out on his own and form his own boat maintenance company, he only had a small house with attached garage where he could pull small boats in under cover. If he wanted to work on larger boats, he had to either park them outside, or go to where they were in dry dock, or tied up to the dock. What seemed like a disadvantage turned out to be a good thing, because many folks were having a hard time finding someone who would come out and work on their boats on site. Soon Scott established a reputation for excellent service, fair prices, and prompt response, traveling the Emerald Coast from Gulf Breeze to Panama City to meet customer needs. From these early beginnings, American Mobile Marine Service & Repair LLC has grown to become a major boat repair facility in the Fort Walton Beach/Destin area. Currently, the shop at 920 Central Avenue has two large indoor bays as well as ample outdoor secure storage area for working on customer boats. This full-service repair facility can handle all major boat brands, whether they involve inboard, inboard/outdrive, or outboard engine configurations. The shop can repair and […]

Destin Condos
Recently, I went on a vacation with my family. My week vacation consisted of driving about 10 miles from Fort Walton Beach, FL to Miramar Beach, FL, which is in the Destin area. On this vacation, I had multiple family members join us from three different states, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Mississippi. We rented a condo, which allowed us to all stay together. Also, it allowed us to save a lot money while on vacation because we cooked most of our meals at the condo. There are some fabulous Destin condos to choose from including 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, 3 bedroom, and sometimes 4 bedroom condos. If you plan on cooking, make sure to check to see if the condo has a full kitchen, as opposed to a kitchenette. If you plan on eating out in Destin restaurants every night, than a kitchenette should work just fine for you. Destin tourism is booming. The restaurants, hotels, and condos are all busy. There are many Destin events happening such as live music, festivals, free outdoor movies, and a lot more, so be sure to take a look at the Destin calendar and have some fun. The Destin beaches, of course, […]

The beaches are some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The sugar white sand is said to be the whitest sand in the world. Where does the white sand in Destin come from, you might ask? The white sand on the beaches, which is made of quartz crystal that is finely ground, comes from the Appalachian Mountains. The quartz crystal flows from the Appalachian Mountains, down the Apalachicola River, and eventually is deposited into the Gulf of Mexico where it is distributed by the Gulf currents from Panama City Beach to the Eastern Alabama Coa30st. This beautiful sugary white sand along with the amazing Emerald Green and Blue water of the Emerald Coast makes Destin one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

FREE and Reduced Price Kids Summer Movies for 2012
These days, it’s really expensive to take your family of 4 to the movies. Be prepared to spend upwards of around $35 plus any concessions. However, several of our area theaters are offering FREE and $1 movies for children, and, of course for the adults as well. There is no catch. There are, however, a couple of rules of thumb to follow: These theaters are doing this at an extremely low cost or completely FREE so please support them by buying concessions, such as popcorn, candy, and drinks. Respect the theaters by throwing away your trash Respect other people by not talking, staying off your cell phone, and keeping your kids quiet. Just because the movie is free, doesn’t mean you should let your kids run wild or talk through the movie. There are 3 area theaters that are offering movies. All movies start at 10:00 am. See the schedules for each theater below for the rest of the summer: Regal United Artists Santa Rosa 10 – Mary Esther, FL 6/26 Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore 6/27 Hugo 7/3 Adventures of Tin Tin 7/4 Puss in Boots 7/10 Kung Fu Panda 2 7/11 Rango 7/17 Rio 7/18 […]

The Vision of EmeraldCoastHub.com
After several years living on the Emerald Coast of Florida, I’ve come to realize that there is not a “Go To Website” that is comprehensive enough to include all things about the Emerald Coast. Sure, you can visit the Emerald Coast Tourist Development Council site which is a great resource about tourism related businesses. However, since my business doesn’t target tourists, this organization only helps me indirectly by working to keep the tourism-dependent businesses busy so they have to funds to market using my company. There is the NWF Daily News, which is a great source on area news. There are radio and television station websites which provide advertisements about upcoming events. There are multiple Chamber of Commerce organizations along the Emerald Coast, which provide directories of their Chamber members. What I have been looking for is a source that offers information about all businesses, whether they have paid to be included in the directory or not. I’m looking for an area calendar that is so complete that I’ll never be misinformed about an event or miss another event because I didn’t know it was happening. I want a source that can easily direct me to the right place to […]
