Mi Gente Authentic Mexican Food
My family and I discovered Mi Gente’s Supermarket a couple of years ago and from the first taste we were hooked. I was born and raised in El Paso, TX where great Mexican food can be found within a block or two anywhere in the city. I left there some 20+ years ago and with the exception of traveling to Mexico haven’t had really great, authentic Mexican food since. Then we went to Mi Gente. These are the best tacos anywhere in the county. Now, if you’re looking for ambiance or specialized service this is not the place for you. It is a grocery store with many great items to buy including fantastic baked goods and fresh corn tortillas, but this is not a sit down restaurant. The menu for the food that is available can be viewed over the register in the market. They have burritos, quesadillas, tortas, and tacos, but my all time favorite are the tacos. You can either get regular tacos (meat only) or super tacos with avocado and melted cheese. My family goes for the super tacos every time. You have your choice of 6 different types of meat as well. You can choose from carne asada (grilled steak), chorizo (a spicy Mexican sausage), barbacoa (my personal favorite, shredded beef), al pastor (BBQ pork), lengua (beef tongue), or buche (pork belly). The meats are juicy and flavorful every time. They are served in warm, fresh corn tortillas and can be topped with several items from their condiments bar.
The procedure for ordering food can be a bit daunting for first time diners. First, you go into the market and order your food at which time they will give you a ticket and you pay for your food. Make sure to grab a drink from the market and a little dessert in the bakery as well before you check out. Then you will take your ticket next door to the food truck/ covered pavillion. Give your ticket to the whomever is working in the food truck. They will freshly make your order and then you can top it with anything you like from their fresh condiment bar. You can sit in the fresh air pavillion to enjoy your food while you plot about coming again later in the week to eat more tacos. Seriously, they are that good.
If you are looking for a taste of real Mexican food in a very casual atmosphere, this is your place. See you there!
